Which Pots Are Safe for Growing Edible Plants?

Hey everyone! I'm a newbie looking to kick off my first indoor herb garden. I've come across a bunch of cute pot options but I'm curious if there are any types I should definitely avoid using for growing edible plants. Are there specific glazes that are a no-go, or should I just stick to terracotta pots? Sorry if this seems like a silly question, I'm just trying to get it right!

When it comes to growing edible plants, you can really use whatever container fits your needs. Personally, I often use food service buckets since they’re cheap and usually food-grade, so no worries about contaminants leaching out. Just make sure to clean them well after you get them from places that use them for pickles or butter!

Terracotta pots are definitely a better choice than plastic. As for glazes, avoid anything that's not a ceramic glaze—like paints or sealers. Metallic glazes can be dangerous due to heavy metals like chromium or manganese, especially if they're not fired correctly. Just keep an eye on potential leaching if you use any glazed pots!

Have you tried cloth grow bags? They’re super convenient and great for growing edibles!

I try to steer clear of plastic pots for my food plants since they can break down over time. Glazed pots can be tricky too; make sure they don't have those 'no food' stickers on them. I prefer unglazed terracotta and wood planters for my herbs. Save the plastic for non-edibles!

Totally agree! Terracotta is great for herbs that don't need too much water, plus it looks rustic. Just be careful with pots that have questionable glazes—better safe than sorry!
