Is One Screw Enough for My Lightswitch Cover?

Asked By CuriousCat92 On

I picked up a lightswitch cover from a thrift store, and I'm finally getting around to installing it. The problem is, it only has one screw hole at the bottom. I'm not sure if that's going to keep it secure enough, or if I should drill a second hole at the top. Also, there's this thin foam stuck on the back of the cover—should I take that off, or is it fine to leave it on? Any advice would be really appreciated!

I agree that two screws are ideal, but one should work fine. Just make sure it’s securely tightened. As for that foam, it could help with gaps; I’d leave it unless it looks damaged. Better to keep it as is if you're uncertain.

While having two screw holes is generally better for stability, using just one screw should keep the cover in place, especially if it fits well. Just ensure that it's not too heavy for a single point of contact. As for the foam on the back, it's likely there for insulation or to keep the cover snug against the wall. If it looks in good shape, you can probably leave it on; just check that it's not causing any issues or gaps when you install it.
