Hey everyone! I've recently developed a spontaneous interest in woodworking and I'm eager to give it a try. However, I want to make sure I can dive into this hobby without blowing my budget or committing to it fully just yet. I'm aiming to create small items like cutting boards, coasters, and signposts using wood that I can find for free or repurpose.
That said, I live in a pretty cramped space—just one room that's already packed. I do have access to a backyard, which I could utilize a bit.
So, my main questions are: Is it feasible for me to tackle these small-scale woodworking projects on a tight budget and without much space? And besides a measuring tape, what basic tools would I need to get started? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Thanks! 🙂

You might want to check out local community colleges or maker spaces for any woodworking classes; those can be really helpful to get you started! Honestly, it can be a bit daunting at first and the initial results may feel far from what you expect, but it's so rewarding once you learn. If you do want to get a few tools, I’d say a jigsaw or a skill saw and a drill would be essential. For your first project, think about making a simple bookshelf out of plywood. That can really help you gauge if this is something you'd like to pursue further!
Given your space and budget constraints, carving might be an excellent alternative. Starting with a $50 carving kit to whip up items like wooden spoons can be a lot simpler and less space-consuming. Just remember, woodworking can branch out into so many areas, and usually, you’ll need a decent collection of tools and space for the bigger projects, which may not fit your current setup.
Great idea! I hadn’t thought about carving! I’ll definitely look into that approach. Patience might be key until I get more space!

Thanks a ton for the suggestions! I’ll definitely look into classes and resources around me. I live in a more rural area, but maybe I can find something!
