I've got an old TV that works perfectly fine, but I'm really not a fan of the constant ads on modern Smart TVs. I was wondering if there's a way to upgrade this TV to make it 'smart', possibly using a Raspberry Pi or an old laptop. I envision something similar to Steam's Big Picture mode, where I could customize it with streaming apps and browsers. It would be great to browse YouTube without ads or to use the standard Android YouTube app. Does anyone have experience with this or know of any resources that could help?

Honestly, if you're looking for simplicity, just grab a cheap used mini PC along with a keyboard and mouse remote. Super easy, and you'll be set up in no time!
You should definitely check out Kodi. It might do exactly what you're looking for, and there's a whole community around it, just peek at r/kodi for more info!
One option is to use a mini PC like a Minisforum combined with a wireless keyboard and mouse. You can launch Steam in Big Picture mode on Windows, or even install Steam Deck OS. The cool part is you can add non-Steam games like Plex or Jellyfin and a web browser, so your TV experience is how you want it!
Wow, I had no idea you could add browsers to Steam. I feel a bit dumb for not knowing this!

Haha, that's a fair point! But just to clarify, I wasn't planning on using it for anything inappropriate... maybe it’s worth a think after all.
