I've got a significant hole in my pavement that I need to fill. The issue is that the dirt underneath sinks down quite a bit – about 5 inches! If I just pour cement in there, it will just fall through because of all that space. What's something solid and affordable that I can use to fill in that hole first, so I can properly place the cement on top? Would things like rocks, bricks, or something else work?

Using compacted 3/4 minus gravel is actually a great option for filling that hole. It packs down pretty well and gives you a solid base for your cement. Just make sure to really compact it down before adding the cement on top!
You might want to just go with gravel first. It offers good drainage and then you can pour your cement on top once it's all set. If you have some bricks or big rocks lying around, those can work too as they’ll help fill up space, but gravel would probably be the cheapest and easiest option.
I agree with others – gravel sounds like a reliable choice. Just remember, you actually want concrete, not just cement. And if you’re ever unsure, it's good to know what caused the hole in the first place so it doesn’t happen again.
