How to Properly Install a Deadbolt?

I'm the go-to handy person in my friend group and I work as an electrician, so I've got a decent grasp of tools and some DIY skills, even if I'm not a pro. Recently, a friend of a friend experienced an attempted break-in that was thwarted by a chain lock on their door. Now, they're looking to add a deadbolt for extra security. I'm curious about the installation process and whether a deadbolt is the best option, or if there are other ways to reinforce the door without having to replace it entirely. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You could consider using sash jammers! They’re easy to install and quick to lock and unlock. I’ve got them on my doors and feel way more secure. Just make sure to install them out of reach if there are little kids around.

Check out kits at hardware stores! They usually come with the drill bit, hole saw, and a template to help guide you. I like to take out the locking door knob and just use a passage knob instead, so you won’t accidentally lock yourself out without a key.

I've installed quite a few deadbolts myself. You really only need a 2-1/8” hole saw and a 1” paddle drill bit for special tools. Super straightforward! Just drill the holes, mortise and install—they’re definitely not tricky to do, usually takes about an hour max.
