Hey everyone! I'm feeling a bit anxious about mounting my TV, and I could really use some reassurance (or awareness). I found some studs to drill into, but one of them was really close to an outlet, like just a couple of inches away but still about 3 feet up. I used a stud and wire finder, but my husband had turned off the power earlier, so it didn't pick up any wires when I was checking that area. I went ahead and drilled into the studs at what I believed was the center, according to the stud finder. I felt some resistance while drilling, but I didn't hear any weird noises or feel anything metal—just the stud itself. After that, I turned the power back on, and thankfully, nothing sparked or exploded! However, when I used the stud finder again afterward, it detected wires running through the same stud I drilled into, and it seemed like there were wires in most of the other studs too. I'm pretty sure they run vertically, but I'm not completely certain. It's been a few hours since I drilled, and I'm still on edge. Is everything okay? Am I at risk for a fire? Also, was the screw I used too long?

It's always better to be safe than sorry! Since your house is new, it’s likely built to current codes, which usually require protections around wires. Those wires should be deeper in than where you drilled, especially if the stud finder is showing them further in. As for screw length, 5mm screws are standard for mounts, but it’s best to ensure they aren’t too long. If you’re still uneasy, maybe check in with a professional just to ease your mind. You got this!
It's good that you're being cautious! Typically, metal plates should protect wires as they pass through studs, but this isn't a guarantee in all homes, particularly older ones with questionable renovations. If you're really worried, you might consider opening up the wall to take a look inside—it's a bit of work, but it can give you peace of mind. Just remember that it's standard for wires to run through the center of studs, so if the stud finder is detecting them, they might be well within the safe zone and not too close to where you drilled.
That makes sense! If it’s a newer home, they should have followed electrical codes. Plus, if nothing sparked when you turned the power back on, that's a good sign!

Sounds like you did a good job! If you have doubts, an electrician can always double-check things for you!
