I'm looking for a reliable tool to cut through metals for my light plumbing and HVAC work, especially for pipes that are no larger than 1 1/2 inches. I often see grinders on sale with offers like a free battery, but I've heard some pretty scary experiences from people who've used them. I'm considering a band saw instead, but they hardly ever go on sale and don't come with any extra bits. I do have plenty of Dewalt batteries lying around, but I'd love to make the most economical choice. Any advice on which tool I should go for?

If you're worried about both cost and safety, maybe think about getting a hacksaw as a backup. They’re inexpensive and work well for lighter jobs. Once you figure out if cutting metal is something you do often, then consider investing in that band saw. I picked up a used one off Facebook Marketplace for a good price, and it's been fantastic for clean, quiet cuts.
A grinder will absolutely do the job! It's compact and super versatile, making it a great option if you're planning to tackle different projects. I've used both, and while I got my grinder first, I find it does almost everything well. You can really get in there and make those cuts with ease. Just be cautious and get comfortable using it, and you’ll be fine!
I've gotta say, a band saw is the way to go for cleaner cuts. It doesn't create sparks, which is super important on commercial sites where you need to avoid hot work permits. Plus, I've noticed decent sales on band saws lately at toolup, so keep an eye there instead of just Home Depot or Lowe's. It'll give you that nice control and precision for your jobs.
