I just got a new over-the-range microwave, and I'm in a bit of a bind. The installation bracket doesn't have any pre-drilled holes where the stud is located - I've only got one stud at the center of the wall, and the outer anchors will need to be toggle bolts. Plus, there are leftover marks from previous installations nearby, which makes me wonder about the stability of toggles in that area. I've attached some images showing where the bracket needs to go and my proposed toggle hole locations. My main questions are: 1) Should I modify the bracket to allow for attachment to the stud, perhaps by drilling a hole in line with it? 2) Is it safe to add a new toggle hole so close to the existing ones?

I'd recommend going ahead and drilling a hole in the bracket to align it with the stud. It's the most secure way to mount it, so you'll have either one big screw or two smaller ones directly into the stud. For the toggles, make sure you use solid large toggle bolts, they should handle the weight just fine. And when you're measuring, don’t forget the height of the cabinet frame—it can throw off your positioning if you’re not careful!
Check your installation instructions to see if there's guidance for irregular stud layouts. If it doesn't specify, definitely drill a hole in the bracket right over the stud. Then place your toggles at least an inch inward from the previous holes you mentioned. Aim for a total of five points of support (one stud screw and four toggles), which will help distribute the load well.
Honestly, drilling new holes in the bracket is definitely an option, but if you want to be super secure, consider removing some drywall and adding blocking where the microwave will go. It’s a bit more work but for $20 you’ll have peace of mind that it's really secure.
