Best Jointer and Planer for Beginner Woodworkers?

Asked By CraftyMason87 On

I'm a beginner woodworker and I'm slowly building up my tool collection. Right now, I'm looking to get a jointer and a planer so that I can complete some projects like building a backyard shed, window seats, a front fence, and some cabinets. I've seen many different brands out there, but the only one I really know is Milwaukee. I'd love some recommendations for suitable jointers and planers. Additionally, I'm considering helical blades, but I'm not really sure if they're worth it. My budget is around $800 for each tool. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You should definitely check out the DeWalt DW735 planer. It's a solid choice, and you can always upgrade to a helical head later. Honestly, I've found that I use my planer way more than my jointer, so starting with a good planer might be the way to go.

Have you thought about a jointer-planer combo? You get a lot more for your money, especially if you're looking to spend around $1600 total. Some combos even come with helical heads, which might save you in the long run. If you're okay with used equipment, you could find some great deals.

The DW735 planer is a classic pick! It's not perfect, but for the price, you can't beat it. I personally got a used jointer because they are simpler machines, but definitely be patient with that. If you're not seeing any good deals, don’t rush into buying a jointer. A lot of your projects might not even need one at first.

For the jointer, I'd recommend getting a freestanding model with cast iron infeed and outfeed tables. Trust me, it’s worth it! I have an 8" Grizzly jointer that I love, and you can often find used ones out there. As for the planer, the DeWalt is a good investment, but check out Oliver’s bench top model too; it comes with a helical head already installed.
