Can I Polish My Quartz Countertop to Match the Glossy Finish?

Asked By CuriousNovo27 On

I recently moved into a new home and noticed a distinct difference between the finishes of my kitchen countertops. One section has a matte and slightly textured finish, while the island has a shiny, glossy appearance. This has been a hassle, as the matte surface shows smudges and is tougher to clean compared to the glossy island. The seller suggested replacing the entire countertop with one that matches the island's shine, but I want to explore whether it's possible to polish the matte section for a more uniform look. I've seen some polishing products online, but they seem geared towards touch-ups rather than larger areas. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like your matte finish is what's known as a 'leathered' finish, which is often not available in man-made quartz, but should be covered by your contractor if that’s what you ordered. Polishing can be tricky; I’ve done it with marble, but you might end up with uneven surfaces if you try to polish the quartz. Generally, I think this might not be your responsibility to fix, especially if you didn’t choose that finish.

If you're dealing with a brand new quartz countertop, your builder should ideally be the one to fix this issue for you. It shouldn’t be on you to cover the cost if it was a mistake on their part.

Just fyi, I built my own house too, so I'm not sure if my contractor will foot the bill either. But it’s worth pushing them to handle it!
