Need Help Installing Wood Between Roof Joists for Sliding Doors

Hey everyone! I've got a bit of a project going on. I'm trying to put a Pax wardrobe in a gap where an old fitted wardrobe used to be, but I'm having some issues with the roof joists not being in the right spot for the sliding doors I want to install. My plan is to drill two small pieces of wood between the joists to create a support beam for the new doors. Is this a straightforward task? If so, what thickness and type of wood should I use, and which screws would be best? I get a little lost in the screw aisle, and I could really use some guidance! I'm also dealing with planning on which loft boards to remove to access the insulation, as I previously boarded it up when I bought the house. Sorry if this seems like a basic question—I'm just feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the challenges!

Yes, you can definitely install wood between the joists to support your new doors! Just make sure you use a sturdy piece of plywood or 2x4 lumber for the beam. As for the thickness, a 1-inch thick board should provide enough support. For screws, I recommend wood screws around 2.5 to 3 inches long to secure everything tightly. Don't forget to drill pilot holes to prevent splitting the wood! Feeling overwhelmed is totally normal, just take it step by step! Good luck!

Also, make sure to check the weight capacity of the boards you use. Better safe than sorry!

Drilling wood between the joists is a common solution for situations like this. Just ensure the wood is treated or suitable for construction to prevent any moisture issues later. If you’re unsure about the screw sizes, grab a few options and ask someone at the store for help—don’t be shy! It's great that you’re tackling this project yourself, you’ll be happy once it’s done!

Yeah, and having a plan for the loft boards is a smart move. It can be a pain to deal with insulation, but it sounds like you're on the right track!
