Best Soft Woods for Beginners in Carving

Hey everyone! I'm looking for advice on the best types of soft wood to use for sculpting. I've mostly only worked with avocado pits and some random scraps, but I've found that the wood isn't very malleable at times. What types of wood would be good for a beginner like me to carve with? Any specific recommendations would be super helpful!

Basswood is often considered the go-to wood for beginners. It's got a forgiving grain, which makes it easier to carve. If you're looking for options, tulip poplar is also a good choice, as well as poplar and some soft pines. They all carve well and won't give you too much trouble as you're getting started.

I've had great luck with basswood, tulip poplar, and poplar. They're quite soft and work nicely for carving. Plus, mahogany is another good option if you want something a little different. Just stick with those softer woods and you should be fine!
