Hey everyone! I'm a total newbie to woodworking and I've decided to dive in by making some simple guitar cabinets with box joints and restoring old shellacked radio cabinets. I currently have a few tools: some wood chisels (sizes 10mm, 15mm, and 20mm), a sanding block, a couple of files, a metalworking handsaw, a combination square, a try square, and a rotary sander. I'm considering picking up a basic plane for under 50 Euros. Do you think this setup is good enough? Also, is building a simple cabinet a reasonable first project, and what would be the best way to approach it? Thanks for any advice!

Cutting box joints by hand can be tricky, so I’d recommend considering a router and a jig for accuracy. It’ll save you a lot of frustration! Dovetails are a bit more forgiving but box joints need precision if you want them to fit well. Also, just as a heads-up, starting with something less complex might be better to build your confidence.

What about using 45° joints? I think those might let you use nails and glue, but I’m not totally sure on the terminology!
