Is a $12,000 Mold Remediation Quote Just a Rip-off?

I'm dealing with a mold problem in my basement that hasn't seen any dehumidifiers from the previous owners, and now there's visible mold on the wood paneling and structural beams. I've got two quotes so far: one for $12,000 and another for $6,000, which both seem ridiculously high. I'm wondering if I could tackle this myself instead by wearing some protective gear, removing the moldy panels, spraying an effective solution, and using a couple of $250 dehumidifiers. How much work is really involved here? Are these professional prices justified due to the risks associated with mold, or can I save some money and do it myself?

It's definitely possible they're making a profit from your mold anxiety. You can clean up and dry out things on your own. Just ensure you’re really addressing the moisture problem first—household dehumidifiers should be enough for that.

Thanks! The one dehumidifier has already made a huge difference, but I can see I might need a second one.
