Hey everyone! I'm new to woodworking and have mainly worked with power tools in the past. Now, I want to dive into fine woodworking with hand tools and build a sturdy workbench for my projects. I've been exploring different styles, like Roubo, Shaker, and Paul Sellers, but I'm a bit overwhelmed. I'm considering a workbench that's about 180 cm long, 60 cm wide, and 96 cm high (roughly 6' x 24" x 38"). I have a few specific questions:
1) What's the best storage option for tools? I tend to prefer enclosed storage, so I'm thinking about either drawers under the bench or a wall cabinet above it, but not a floor-standing tool chest.
2) Should I leave a gap between the drawers and the benchtop, or is it better to have the drawers right up to the top? I know the gap helps with workpiece holding, but does it make a mess?
3) For workholding, I like the idea of using a face vise along with some other methods like a planing stop and bench hooks. Should I leave some overhang for clamping, and is that worth sacrificing drawer space? Would this setup be sufficient, or do I need additional tools like bench dogs or a tail vise?
4) Lastly, I'm considering tool well trays. Are they practical, and what benefits do they offer? I'm torn between keeping it simple or going for multiple trays. Appreciate any tips!

From my experience, drawers under the benchtop can get in the way when you need to clamp something down directly. I ended up removing mine because they just filled with dust and chips. Tool wells can become cluttered with scraps too, so I'd be cautious if you need all that surface area. I recommend investing in dog holes and holdfasts; they significantly expand your workholding options, making it easier to tackle various tasks.
You should definitely check out "The Anarchist's Workbench" - it's free to download and has tons of helpful information. I went with a design that fits my frequent moves, and I added a tool tray. It requires some discipline to keep it tidy, but it helps to have a dedicated space for smaller tools. Just a heads up, make sure not to overthink your first bench; you will likely make another one later as your skills evolve!
I've tried both with and without tool wells on my benches, and I personally love having one. They keep smaller tools organized and prevent larger ones from falling off the bench. If I build another bench, I’ll definitely include a tool well!

Could you suggest a good height for the space between drawers and the benchtop? And do you keep items like clamps in there? Cleaning them out would also be a concern for me.
