Help Me Decide on a Sturdy Workbench Design with Tool Storage Options!

Hey everyone! I'm diving into fine woodworking and I've been consuming tons of info on building the perfect workbench. I'm looking for some solid advice on a few key points before I start. I'm aiming to create a sturdy workbench that's about 180 cm long, 60 cm wide, and 96 cm high (around 6' x 24" x 38"). Here's what I need help with:

1) **Tool Storage Options**: I want to keep my workspace organized without taking up too much floor space. I'm considering a combination of drawers under the bench and a wall cabinet above. What's your experience? Are drawers, a wall cabinet, or both better for tool storage?

2) **Gap Between Drawers and Benchtop**: Some workbenches have drawers that go right up to the top, while others leave a gap for easier workpiece holding. Do you find this gap worth it, or is it just a mess-collector?

3) **Work Holding Options**: I've seen some pros just use a face vise and clamps. I'm thinking of adding a face vise, planing stop, and bench hooks. Should I include overhang for clamping? How important are other features like bench dogs or a sliding deadman?

4) **Tool Well Trays**: I like the idea of tool well trays but want to know if they're really that beneficial in practice. Should I stick with a simple design or go for multiple trays?

I'd really appreciate any advice, experiences, or even plans/pictures of your own workbenches! Thanks!

For storage, I went for a combination of drawers and a tool wall. The drawers keep things tidy, while the wall makes using my less-frequently used tools easier. As for the gap under the bench, it depends. If you're using bench dogs, it's a great idea to have that space for easier work holding. Otherwise, that gap can just gather dust.

I think overhang is important for clamping. A face vise on the left is conventional for right-handers, but having extra space on the right lets you clamp longer pieces easily.

Lastly, tool wells can get dirty, so just plan for cleaning. If you keep a vacuum handy, they can be great for keeping your workspace neat!

That makes sense! I love the idea of a tool wall. Did you face any issues fitting your drawers?

Not really! I just made sure to measure my tools beforehand so everything fits snugly.

Every workshop is unique, so consider what you’ll be working on. I started with a simpler design but ended up customizing it as I figured out my needs. If you're constrained on space but need to store a lot of tools like I do, a tool chest on wheels has been super handy for me. It’s all about finding the right balance for your specific projects!

I hear you on that! I tend to modify everything too, but it sounds like that could work out well for me.

Check out Rex Krueger’s YouTube channel; he has loads of awesome bench plans and tutorials. His videos helped me figure out my workbench setup. I went with a Nicholson-style myself, which is simple and great for hand tools. It’s easy to modify for storage too!

I love his stuff! He’s got such a good way of explaining things. I've watched a lot of his videos already.
