I initially planned to grow cannabis with my two high pressure sodium (HPS) lights, but I've changed my mind. Now, I'm interested in growing some herbs and vegetables, specifically things like salad greens, herbs for cooking, small carrots, radishes, and maybe cucumbers and hot peppers. I want to set up these lights properly so I can maximize my efforts without wasting money. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Honestly, using HPS lights might not be the best choice for your new plan. They can lead to high electricity bills and aren't very efficient for growing herbs and veggies. Have you thought about switching to LED lights instead? They produce less heat and can save you a ton on energy costs, plus they're great for smaller plants like the ones you're considering.
Stick to your plan of using those lights but consider your ventilation. Since you mentioned you have a ballast and fan, that's a great start! Just be aware that while they do light up your plants, they can also heat them up quite a bit, so air circulation is key. And with the right setup, you might enjoy seeing your herbs and veggies thrive!
If you decide to stick with the HPS lights, just remember to hang them at the right height. You’ll need some fans to manage the heat since HPS can get pretty hot. Also, keep in mind that HPS bulbs usually last around a year, so you'll eventually need to replace them. A good rule of thumb is 50W of HID lighting per square foot, so calculate your space accordingly!
