Best USB Outlet Options for Floating Shelves?

Asked By WanderLust99 On

I'm designing a cozy corner in my room with floating shelves to show off some statues and electronic gadgets. The shelves are about 2 inches thick, and I'm planning on installing LED strips on the front. My main challenge is figuring out how to embed USB outlets at the back of these shelves so I can plug in the gadgets as needed. I'm working with a carpenter and an electrician, so I'm not too worried about the actual installation.

I would love to have a few USBA and USBC outlets embedded, but I've hit some snags with the options available.
1. Grommets are typically over 2 inches thick, and the 1.5-inch versions might not allow for heat dissipation, which could cause damage.
2. Loose keystone options in plates or snap-on connectors that connect to a transformer seem unsafe since they aren't designed for this type of use.
3. The Legrand Wiremold Plugmold system looks like a decent fit with its raceways, but the colors just don't match the dark maple wood I'm using— all I can find are white, black, ivory, grey, or steel.

What are some good options I should consider?

Have you considered using USB outlets designed specifically for installation in furniture? There are some models available that come in various finishes and are specifically made for embedding in wood. You might find one that matches your dark maple better than standard wall plates. Check out some branded options like Legrand or Adorne—there are styles that might look more integrated. Just be sure they're rated for heat dissipation!

That sounds like a good idea! I’ll look for options specifically designed for furniture. Thanks!
