What’s the Best Way to Reinforce a Bookcase for Heavy Tanks?

I'm looking for advice on how to reinforce my bookshelf from Walmart, which has a weight limit of 35lbs per shelf. I want to support at least 110lbs on one shelf for a tank. Is there a safe way to strengthen it, or should I just look for a new shelving solution?

To make your bookshelf safer, one option is to use metal braces at the corners where the shelves meet the side panels. They might not look as nice, but they can significantly enhance stability. Check out some options at your local hardware store to see what might work best for you!

If you're set on using that bookshelf, you could try to build a solid frame using 2x4s inside it for reinforcement. You might need to modify the existing shelves or even build a new top shelf from hardwood or 2x material to support the weight better. Just be aware, it’s a lot of work, and consider the cost and time you’ll invest in this project.

Honestly, you might want to reconsider putting that much weight on a standard bookshelf. A friend of mine who runs a pet shop has a horror story about a similar setup that collapsed. If you really need something that can hold that much weight, it's probably best to invest in sturdy metal shelving from places like Costco or Lowe's instead. You don't want to risk damaging your unit or worse, having it topple over!

Yeah, I hear you! It's not worth the risk. Space is an issue for me too, but I think I’d take the plunge and buy a new shelf if it means keeping everything safe.
