Tips for Removing an Old Post Base from Concrete

Asked By CraftyNinja999 On

I'm replacing the handrail on my back stoop and need to remove an old post that's been set in the concrete. I want to fill the hole with grout before installing new railing corner post bases. What's the best way to get rid of the old post? Should I try to leave it, or is it better to remove it entirely? Looking for any workarounds or advice!

If the post is in the exact spot where you need an anchor, I'd suggest breaking out the concrete around the steel part to pull it out. After that, you can pour new concrete with your anchor bolt in place. You could also drill a pilot hole in the steel and tap in a bolt if you're looking for a simpler solution. Good luck!

One solid option is to use a long auger drill bit, maybe around 2 feet. Drill a few holes into the post to turn the wood into splinters and dust, which can help make removal easier. Just be cautious, since it's a steel post!
