Should I Use a Cheaper Painter Instead of My General Contractor?

I'm currently working with a general contractor (GC) who's remodeling my kitchen, adding recessed lighting, putting in a closet, doing some demo work on the walls, and handling small bathroom updates along with flooring. I'm also considering him for the painting. However, I found another painter who offers to do the job for $2,000 less. Should I go ahead and hire the cheaper painter for the painting job, or stick with my GC for everything?

$2,000 is quite a bit to save! However, think about how the total job size factors into that. If the painting is just a small part of the overall renovation, it might be easier to hire the cheaper painter since it's less likely to disrupt the rest of the work. But, if something goes wrong, will you feel comfortable coordinating directly with the painter rather than having your GC handle it? That’s something to weigh too!

Before making a decision, consider how much painting actually needs to be done. Are we talking about just the kitchen or the whole house? Plus, if the GC's schedule would be affected by bringing someone else in, that could lead to delays. Just something to think about!

At the end of the day, it's your money, so choose whoever you feel comfortable with! You could also ask your GC if they can match the cheaper quote, just to see if that’s possible.
