Is it okay to turn off my A/C now that it’s getting colder?

I've turned off my air conditioning since the temperatures are dropping to around 66-68°F in my home, and it's about the same outside. However, I'm concerned that leaving it off might lead to mold growth. What should I do?

First off, you need to check your home’s humidity level. Mold tends to flourish when humidity is over 50%. If it’s humid outside—like 98%—it might still be high inside. If you don’t have a humidity gauge, I've seen a trick where you put a glass of water with a couple of ice cubes in a room and see if it collects condensation. If it does, your humidity is high. Otherwise, a dehumidifier could be a good solution!

Yeah, it sounds like it could be humid if it’s 98% outside, so definitely check your levels!

I did the ice cube test too! No condensation for me either, so I guess we're doing okay!

You might be worried for nothing! 66-68°F is pretty reasonable, especially when you think about how people set their heaters in winter. Just keep an eye on things, and you should be good to leave the A/C off for now.

Honestly, I wouldn’t stress about 66-68°F too much. In winter, you usually heat to around 68°F, so you’re already in the safe zone. Just ensure that you’re ventilating and if you live in a humid area, keeping an eye on your humidity levels is key!

Right? My place gets hotter in the summer, and I always set the A/C to around 78°F when I'm home. It’s all about comfort!

That makes sense! I live in PA and it’s been chilly lately; I guess I can relax a bit!
