I've got two projects lined up and I'm in the market for a new tool. For my first project, I need to cut large circular holes in 1/4 inch plywood for some speaker boxes. I'll be cutting in the center repeatedly, so I want to make sure I get it right. The second project involves cutting out a hole for a sink in a 3/4 inch thick laminate countertop. I'm thinking about buying a new tool tomorrow, but I'm uncertain whether a router or a jigsaw would be better for these tasks. I'd like to hear your thoughts on which one I should pick for now!

You know, if you want the best results, go with both. A router is super versatile and will handle the speaker holes beautifully with the right jig. And for the sink cutout, a jigsaw is a great finishing tool. But if you can spend it, invest more in a good router and grab a cheaper jigsaw with whatever's left.
I recommend a router for the speaker boxes and a simple circle-cutting jig made out of plywood. It’s perfect for precise, repeated cuts! For the sink hole, while a jigsaw can do it, the results can be kind of messy. A router will give you cleaner edges.
For cutting those speaker box holes, I’d definitely go with a router! Using a bearing bit will make those cuts super easy and consistent. When it comes to the sink cutout, start with the jigsaw and then use the router to touch things up for a clean finish. It’ll save you a lot of hassle later on!
Totally agree! If you can only get one tool right now, go for the router. You can use it to cut out the countertop too by making a simple template and just going over it a few times.

How does that jig actually work? I’m all for repeated cuts, especially for something like speaker boxes.
