Need Help Fixing a Stairs Truss Mistake

Asked By CleverCactus97 On

I made a mistake while trying to create more head clearance for my staircase. I removed a 3-foot section of an engineered truss in my basement, thinking I could frame it to handle the load. The truss supports both sides of the staircase, which runs the entire 34-foot length of the basement, and there's a closet directly above. Now I realize that this wasn't the smartest move. Can anyone suggest how I can fix this situation?

You really need to know when to call in a professional. It sounds like you learned a valuable lesson here. I'd recommend reaching out to a structural engineer to make sure everything’s safe and sound. Better safe than sorry!

First off, it might be a good idea to hire a structural engineer. They’ll be able to assess the damage you've done and guide you on how to make the necessary corrections to support the structure properly.
