When is the Right Time to Harvest Butternut Squash?

I have a long vine with three large butternut squash on it, but I didn't plant them myself. I'm curious about how to tell when they are ready to be picked. What signs should I look for?

Check the color of the squash; the green veins coming from the stem should fade to a consistent tan. If it helps, around 120 days is a decent timeframe for harvesting, though that depends on when they were planted. Make sure to look under the squash gently too!

Thanks for the info! I didn't know when they started growing, but I kept watering it because it didn't look like a weed. I also don't know how to post a pic.

You can leave the squash on the vine until the plant dies completely, and just make sure to bring them in before the first frost hits. They'll be fine sitting there for a bit!
