What’s the Best Way to Join 1x10s End-to-End Seamlessly?

I'm working on adding skirt boards to a staircase and need to join two 1x10 boards end-to-end. I'm looking for the best method to create a butt joint that looks as seamless as possible, considering that the boards will need to be moved around a bit before they're secured. Any tips or techniques that might help?

I recommend using pocket screws to keep the boards aligned. After securing them, a little wood filler can make the seam almost disappear, especially after painting. It's simpler than a scarf joint and gives a nice finish too!

A scarf joint is a solid option if you want something that looks nice, especially since it’s just for appearance. Just keep in mind that it can be tricky without the right tools. If you’re up for the challenge, it could give you a great finish!

That sounds like a good idea! I’ve been hesitant because my last attempt at a scarf joint was a bit messy, but I’ll consider giving it another go.
