Help! New to Gardening and Feeling Overwhelmed!

Hey everyone! I'm a new gardener and I'm really eager to get started with growing some veggies and herbs that my family can enjoy. Last summer was my first attempt, but it didn't go well at all—nothing survived. I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed but also really determined to make it work this time around. I live in Missouri and I'm renting a place, so my gardening options are limited. I'd love to try container gardening since I don't have a big yard. I'm thinking about growing things like lettuce, spinach, bell peppers, and maybe some broccoli. How tough are potatoes to grow? Any general advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

First off, don’t get discouraged! Gardening can be tricky, even for experienced gardeners. Container gardening is a great option, and you can definitely grow lettuce and spinach since they have pretty manageable needs. In my experience, broccoli tends to get eaten by pests quickly, but if you and your family like it, go for it! Potatoes are generally easy as long as you keep the soil loose—plus, kids love helping with planting and harvesting. Just remember to read the seed packets for guidance on light and watering. Start small, and it’s all about patience! If it doesn’t work out this year, there’s always next year.

By the way, knowing your gardening zone could help a lot! And when you say half a day of sun, do you mean 4 or 6 hours? If you can find a spot that gets full sun for 6+ hours, that would be ideal. Good luck, and keep us updated on your progress!

Absolutely! I suggest starting with just a couple of different veggies, like 5 each of 2 kinds instead of trying to juggle 5 different ones with just a few plants. It makes it way easier to manage. You might also want to think about grow bags since they’re perfect for container gardening!
