How Can I Identify if a Tool is Gen 1 or Gen 2?

I've noticed some posts where people mention whether a tool is Gen 1 or Gen 2, but I'm not sure how to tell the difference. What tips do you have for confirming if a tool is indeed a Gen 2 version?

A lot of times, the model description will mention the generation, but that's not guaranteed. If you're interested in a specific tool, I suggest googling the model number along with "release date". That will help you figure out how long ago it was released—usually, updates come out every 4-5 years. Just keep in mind that sometimes even within the same generation, manufacturers change small details mid-production! For example, Milwaukee made some adjustments to the M18 High Torque Impact Wrench—if you check the serial numbers, you can see which version you have.

You can quickly check for revisions by looking into the service parts sheet. It shows updates for the same generation!

Yeah, model numbers are key! Just for context, I’ve mostly shifted away from Gen 1 tools because I've had some disappointing experiences—like an M18 chainsaw that leaks pretty badly and an inconsistent 16 gauge nailer. While I do have some Gen 1 tools I like, I prefer to buy the latest versions now, especially with my growing tool collection!

The model number is a reliable way to determine the generation, usually a higher number indicates a newer model. It can be tricky since it's not always obvious, but that’s my go-to method!
