Hey everyone! Happy Labor Day weekend! I recently took the plunge and bought a 1/2 inch 18v impact, and I can't believe I waited so long! It makes dealing with lug nuts and big bolts on our family vehicles so much easier. Now I'm eyeing some deals on either a 3/8 stubby 18v impact wrench or a 1/4 18v impact driver. I handle most of the maintenance on my wife's car, our kids' cars, and my own, including oil changes and tire rotations. The 3/8 would have been a lifesaver last weekend when I was working on my wife's brakes, since my 1/2 inch couldn't fit behind the rotor. But I'm also thinking the 1/4 would be handy for projects like removing wiper arms or getting to the rear plugs on a Camry's V6. I'm planning to eventually get both, but can only afford one right now. Any thoughts on which one is more useful for a DIYer like me?

I'm loving my 3/8 stubby too! It's been a lifesaver in tight spots. I think if you already have tools to go with it, you'll appreciate the 3/8 much more than the 1/4 driver. It’s really about what jobs you plan to tackle!
Definitely go for the 3/8 stubby! It's perfect for tight spaces and a lot more functional for your automotive DIY projects. Plus, if you already have compatible sockets, you'll be set. The 1/4 impact driver is neat for lighter tasks, but you might find yourself wishing you had more power for major car maintenance.
If you can manage, consider checking eBay for second-hand options. You'll find some good deals on tools, and a lot of them are still in great condition. Just make sure to look for real pictures and signs of wear to avoid fakes. Used tools can serve you well for years, especially if you're not looking for professional-grade gear.
I'd suggest you go for the 3/8 stubby if budget's tight. It's more versatile for various jobs, and you can always adjust it down for smaller bolts. Don't underestimate its power for DIY car repairs! If you're set on the 1/4, remember that it's not really intended for heavy-duty tasks. You might get a few things done, but it’s not the ideal choice for wrenching on your car.
Based on my experience, if you're doing a lot of engine work, the 3/8 stubby is definitely the way to go. I tried using an impact driver for that kind of thing, but it just didn't cut it. Smaller bolts are fine, but for heavier stuff, you'll need the power of an impact wrench. Plus, the 3/8 stubby can tackle the bigger jobs better without being as bulky as the 1/2 inch.

I agree! The 3/8 stubby is super handy for car work. There are also adapters available for the 1/4 impact driver, but like you said, it’s just not built for that level of mechanics.
