I'm looking for some advice on painting our kitchen island, which is currently a satin black. My wife wants to change it to green, but I'm unsure if I need to sand the whole thing first. Is there a specific primer or paint combo that would let me skip sanding? The island is in great shape, it's just the color that needs changing. Thanks!

I used Insulx from Benjamin Moore for a similar project and it turned out great. I did a light sand on some areas, but honestly, it’s hard to tell the difference where I did it and where I didn't. Just make sure whatever paint you choose is suitable for your island's material!
10 minutes of sanding might seem like a hassle, but don't skip it! It's a small step that pays off in the long run for the paint's adherence.
In most cases, a light sanding is a good idea to give the paint something to grip onto. It doesn't have to be extensive, just enough to rough up the surface a bit. This will help your new paint stick better and last longer!
It really depends on what type of material your island is made of. If it's melamine, I've had success with melamine paint without any sanding or primer, and it still looks fantastic after years. However, if you're going from black to a lighter color, a primer will likely be necessary. Make sure to post some pictures for the best advice!

Thanks for the insight! I added a photo of the island for reference.
