I'm stuck on whether to buy the Hercules planer and dust extractor combo for $600 or the Dewalt 735x planer for $660. I already have a rigid shop vac with a cyclone, but I do want to invest in a proper dust extractor eventually. Is the Dewalt really worth the extra cash?

You might want to consider a dedicated dust collector for your planer since shop vacs can fill up too quickly. They're really not ideal for heavy-duty tasks like planing. A collector will do a better job generally.
For the Dewalt 735x, all you really need is a collection bag to handle the chips—it has decent airflow. I use the POWERTEC 70334 dust filter bag, and it works pretty well. Just a heads up, it can be a bit cumbersome to connect, but overall, the setup is solid.

Totally agree! If you plan to upgrade to a dust collector anyway, it might be wise to go with the Hercules setup for now.
