I've recently discovered Dahlias and I'm really excited to try growing them this coming year! I'm curious about the best approach: should I order seeds online, or are tubers a better option? As a newbie, I worry that ordering could be pricey and risky, so would it be smarter to just pick some up from a local garden center? If I do decide to order seeds or tubers online, could anyone recommend reliable websites? I live in Zone 6b and plan to treat them as annuals, planting them in the spring after the last frost. Any tips would really be appreciated!

I suggest starting with tubers instead of seeds—it’s an easier route. You can find them at your local shop in spring. If you're unsure about the quality, trying a cheaper pack from places like Costco can be a good way to test the waters. Also, check if there's a local garden society; they often have spring sales for tubers. That way, you can get a feel for what works for you!
I wouldn’t say buying from big-box stores is the best idea, but I did get a few packs of bulbs from Walmart a few years back. Most turned out okay, although they didn’t offer much variety. For online orders, Gurney's is a solid choice, just make sure to buy them when they're in stock during early spring. I started mine indoors, and they grew beautifully, blooming from July to fall. Just be aware they might not survive winter in colder zones like yours.
Absolutely go for tubers to get the best varieties! If you’re willing to dig them up in the fall, you can keep them for years. Just remember to store them somewhere they won’t freeze. If you're looking to order online, Swan Island is great for that! Otherwise, local nurseries also have plants you can buy and save the tubers for next year.
Yes, Swan Island has an awesome selection! Just make sure to order them in late winter or early spring when they’re available.

I totally agree! I’ve had a similar experience with my dahlias; once they start blooming, they can really put on a show!
