Looking for Advice on Adding a Secondary Heating Source to My Home

Hey everyone! I'm exploring options to install an additional heating source in my home. We currently have a heat pump that works through the existing ductwork from an old furnace, which is fine but not efficient enough during the cold winters. We're planning to get a wood boiler and I'd love some advice on the best ways to integrate this into our existing setup. I'm completely new to this so any input on potential solutions—like adding a secondary air handler or modifying the ductwork for a hot water coil—would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, I think you should consult an HVAC professional for this. My uncle has a pellet stove that runs through an air handler and it works well, but it takes a lot of upkeep. When I was a kid, we had a wood furnace that used logs and it was efficient too, but you had to manually manage the fire. If you already have a heat pump, look into options that can supplement it, like off-peak electric heat. Just be prepared for some manual labor depending on what you choose!

For sure! Have you thought about how much space you need to heat? This really influences what system will work best.

Definitely explore using a secondary coil or an air handler that can tie into your existing duct system. It might require some renovations, but it can be done. I've seen systems that integrate wood heat pretty seamlessly, but it can get a bit complicated. Keep in mind that heating isn't something you should dive into without proper knowledge or guidance—hire a pro if you're not comfortable!

Great tips! I second this—getting a professional can save you a lot of headaches down the line.
