I'm running a small craft business and I frequently need tapered dowels that are about 3/8 inch thick and taper down to a point. The problem is that using a drill and belt sander takes over 5 minutes per dowel, which is incredibly time-consuming when I have a ton to do. I'm looking for creative methods or tools to help speed up this process. Any suggestions?

If you have access to a 3D printer, you could design a large pencil sharpener! Use a sharp blade to create the taper. This could save a lot of time compared to sanding each dowel individually!
I suggest trying to make a taper jig for your table saw. It might not be as precise as hand-sanding, but if you're consistent with it, it could save you a lot of time. Just keep in mind that sanding might still be needed at the end to get the finish right!
A lathe could be your best friend for this job! If you can set up a jig to hold the dowels, you could achieve a consistent taper much faster than hand-sanding. There are some fancy jigs available that work almost like giant sharpeners. Just make sure the dowels fit and aren't too thick!

Have you thought about using a pencil sharpener? Some oversized sharpeners are made for construction pencils and might just do the trick! You'd have to check if they can handle the length and thickness, but it's a quick idea to consider.
