What’s the Best Angle for Dovetails in Plywood?

I'm trying to make a small box using some 1/2" plywood I have lying around. It's not for decoration—just building a pinhole camera for fun. I've successfully made a few from cardboard before, but I'm stepping it up to plywood this time. The box will be about 200 mm high, 150 mm wide, and 120 mm deep (that's approximately 8" x 6" x 4.5").

This box will have no top or back, so there are just four plywood pieces involved. I want it strong enough to handle mild shear forces because I'll attach a T-nut at the bottom for a tripod, and I'll be rotating it 90 degrees sometimes. The camera setup weighs around 400 grams (14 oz).

I'm new to woodworking and only using hand tools. I think finger joints would work for me, but I'm considering dovetail joints for added shear strength. I'm not sure what angle to use for the dovetails—should I go for softwood angles (about 1:6) or hardwood angles (about 1:8)? Any advice would be appreciated!

If I were cutting dovetails in plywood, I'd probably go with a 1:6 angle. But honestly, I think it can be a frustrating process. You're better off using a more straightforward joint, like a finger joint or box joint. They’ll give you the strength you need without the hassle.

I appreciate the input! Sounds like box joints might be the safest bet for a beginner like me.

Honestly, I don’t think dovetails in plywood are the way to go. If you really want strength, consider a different joint altogether. Dovetails might just chip out too much with plywood. What about a box joint? They’re a lot easier to cut and should hold up well for your project.

Thanks for the tip! I’ve heard box joints are pretty sturdy. Do you think they’ll hold well for what I need?
