Getting Started with Gardening: Tips for Newbies

Hi everyone! My girlfriend and I just bought a house with a nice piece of land (1.5 acres), and we're really excited to start our garden next spring. We have a designated fenced area (32x60ft) where we plan to set up a supplemental garden (about 8x24ft). Since I've mainly lived in apartments and don't have much gardening experience, I'm looking for helpful resources that can guide us as beginners. Any cost-effective tools or setup ideas would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just a heads up, gardening is all about trial and error! You'll probably exceed some expectations while missing others, but that’s all part of the learning process. Every year, I've learned something new, and it’s been a fun journey!

Definitely lol! Like anything else, it's a learned skill. I’m expecting smaller yields at first but hoping we can get better with practice over the next few years.

One great tip is to bury some logs in your garden area where you plan to plant. This technique, known as Hugelkultur, helps retain moisture and adds nutrients over time. Also, since it's Labor Day now, it's a perfect chance to start planning for grass planting if you're considering that for next year! Just keep watering lightly during the day and take advantage of the morning dew.

There are a couple of dead trees I was planning to cut down in the spring, so I’ll get on that sooner for the Hugelkultur idea. Thanks!
