Hey everyone! I'm an electrical engineer, and while I know my way around gadgets, I have little experience with woodworking. I've helped my parents assemble furniture and fix things around the house but I'm totally new to building larger items, like a table. I'm aiming to create a 160x80cm table using mainly hand tools. I've seen lots of recommendations for fancy equipment, but I'm not looking to invest in expensive tools for a first project. How difficult would this be? Which tools would I need to get it done without breaking the bank?

It's definitely doable! Just remember, the look of the table can vary based on your tools, but the sturdiness won't suffer much. If you're realistic with your goals, you can create something nice without overcomplicating things. YouTube has tons of tutorials, especially for beginners; check those out for visual guidance!
You can definitely build a table using just a hand saw, drill, screws, and simple lumber like 2x4s. If you want a clean look, consider getting some plywood cut to size from a local store. For a sturdy table, I'd suggest a trestle design—it's easier to put together and looks great. If you want a more polished finish, you might eventually want to invest in a table saw, but for your first project, you can keep it simple!
Building a table isn't too complicated! You'll want a flat surface, rigid support, and stable legs. A flat surface is easy; just get a piece of plywood cut to your size at a lumber store. For stabilization, include aprons in your design to avoid any buckling. Lastly, ensure your legs are tightly attached, as you'll need them to support the table well. If you're looking for simplicity, many ready-made legs and treated lumber are available at home centers. A good starting point for your project!

Thanks for the tip! I’d love to make it look nice but won't go overboard on tools just yet. What’s a good budget tool list for a decent-looking table?
