Is It Worth Getting a Dishwasher If It Won’t Be Used for Years?

I'm building an ADU for my aging parents who prefer washing dishes by hand rather than using a dishwasher. Since they likely won't use a dishwasher for years, maybe only once a year for hosting, I'm wondering if it still makes sense to install one. If we do get a dishwasher, will it still function properly after being unused for so long? Or should I just leave the space empty until it's genuinely needed?

You might consider using the empty space for storage instead! It's a great way to maximize space while keeping the plumbing ready in case you want a dishwasher later. And honestly, if you do end up getting one, it should be fine after not being used for a while. Just make sure everything's set up for it to be installed later on!

If it were me, I’d leave the space empty for now. Getting a dishwasher that doesn’t get much use could lead to not knowing about any defects, plus it could be out of warranty by the time you need it. You could decorate the space a bit with a cute skirt or curtain to hide it until it's needed.

Have you thought about running a rinse cycle occasionally, like once a week? It might help keep things in good shape if you decide to install one. Though it does seem like a hassle if you don't plan on using it much.
