I've been aerating my lawn, which is quite heavy with clay. I've come across differing opinions about whether I should add sand to the aerated holes or if compost is the better choice. Some folks believe that mixing sand with clay creates a cement-like mixture, while others argue that sand can actually help with drainage. Is there any consensus on this or advice on the best approach?

From my experience, adding organic matter like compost is the way to go. I've tried using sand before, but it tends to just sit on top of the clay. Compost, on the other hand, attracts worms and helps mix things together naturally over time. I also recommend top dressing your lawn with homemade compost in the winter; it’s a long process but really helps improve soil quality.
I've heard mixed things too, but personally, I think adding sand won't necessarily worsen the situation. Although if you find your lawn becomes a soggy mess, you'll need other solutions like drainage channels or soakaways. I aerate every year and add sand, and it's getting much better! Just make sure you avoid compacting the soil by walking on it when it's wet.
