Best Ways to Clean Drywall Dust from Carpets After Renovation?

Hi everyone! My wife and I just bought a new home and had contractors remove the popcorn ceiling, which resulted in a lot of drywall dust settling deep into our carpets since they didn't cover anything while working. The contractor hired a steam cleaner, but we're still finding dust even after several vacuum passes. We've reached out to the contractor for help, but he's gone silent. We need to sort this before we move in at the end of September. What's the best way to get this dust out? Should we just consider replacing the carpets altogether? Also, we were suggested to use a cross rotating brush followed by a dry vac and steam cleaning. Do those actually help in this situation?

Using a shop vac with a HEPA filter along with a carpet shampooer could be your best bet. Regular vacuums tend to just stir the fine drywall dust around, so a shop vac will help to really suck it up. If the dust is really packed down, you might want to think about getting new carpets instead to save yourself the hassle.

I say go ahead and replace the carpets! That dust is sneaky; you'll be finding it for years if it’s really settled in. Plus, a fresh start in your new home might just be what you need. And don’t forget to share your experience with that contractor online!

Honestly, I'd be a bit uneasy trying to clean the carpets myself knowing how much dust is embedded. It might be worth getting a quote for new carpets at this point; it could save you headaches later.
