Hey everyone! I'm in zone 6 in northeast Ohio and I've been wondering about the best approach to my coneflowers as the season changes. In the past, I used to cut them down after they faded, but over the last few years, I've been leaving them standing to let the seeds spread. Recently, I've come across some advice suggesting that I should wait until spring to cut them down to benefit wildlife. However, I'm not sure what to do since they're looking pretty shabby and ruining the fall vibe in my garden. Any thoughts?

If possible, it's great to leave them for the birds. One idea is to plant some mums or other fall flowers around your coneflowers to hide their scraggly look. That way you can still support the wildlife and keep your garden looking nice!
I've cut most of mine down but kept a few for the birds to enjoy. Just letting them seed everywhere might result in more coneflowers than you bargained for next year! Balance is key for a well-managed garden, I think.
I'm further south, but I generally leave my coneflowers until spring too. Right now, the goldfinches are loving them, and while they might not look the best, I’ve learned to accept it. The birds will appreciate what’s left during winter as well!
That’s a good point! I’d hate to have my garden overrun by coneflowers next season.
