How Can I Make My Mailbox Breakaway to Prevent Damage from Cars?

Asked By CuriousCat88 On

My mailbox has been hit by my neighbor's friends' cars several times now, and it's really frustrating. I've been using smaller screws to let the top half of the mailbox break away without causing damage to the main post or any vehicles. However, my neighbors recently tried to help and used heavy-duty screws instead. I'm considering alternatives like heavy-duty dual lock or magnetic solutions, but I'd love some suggestions on how to make sure the mailbox can break away easily while still being sturdy. Unfortunately, I can't relocate the mailbox without major work on my property.

That sounds frustrating! One idea is to look into a spring-mounted mailbox. There are products out there specifically designed to flex or swing away upon impact, like those for areas with heavy snowfall. I stumbled upon one on Amazon that might be a good option for you. Just make sure it's rated for some decent impacts!

I think something like that could be really handy! Plus, it could save your mailbox from more damage in the future.

Also, I think it's a good compromise if you want to keep it looking decent but still want to protect it.

Honestly, if they're hitting your mailbox that often, you might need to reinforce it. Consider a six-foot steel post that's set deep in concrete. I did something similar a while back and it’s been unscathed since! It might be overkill, but it's chewed through a few cars without any damage to the mailbox itself.

Just remember—if you do that, it might be a liability if someone hits it. Always a good idea to check local laws!

Right! You want to protect your mailbox but not turn it into a legal nightmare.

You could also try putting up some decorative rocks around the base of your mailbox. They can deter people from getting too close, and it adds a nice touch visually. It's an easy fix that doesn't require much if any heavy lifting!

Absolutely! If it looks nice, people will be more careful around it.

I love that idea! Plus, it's super easy to implement without too much hassle.
