How Can I Fix My Dishwasher’s Drain Smell?

I've been dealing with a foul smell from my dishwasher for years now. It's connected directly to the drain through a DW tailpiece that runs in the ceiling joists of my basement. I've attached a photo for reference. I'm trying to figure out possible solutions, like whether I need to add a trap or something similar. The PVC drain pipe is positioned at the top of the joists, which I suspect isn't helping with proper drainage. Also, I should note that my dishwasher model doesn't come with a filter. Any advice would be appreciated!

Is there a sink above your dishwasher? Sometimes, having a proper sink setup can be beneficial for drainage. If the dishwasher's drain is too high, it might not be able to drain properly, contributing to the odor problem. A low drain with a trap might help improve the situation. You could consider installing a trap if it’s feasible for your setup.

If your dishwasher doesn't have a filter, that could be part of the issue. Consider installing a small trap in the system to catch food particles and prevent them from causing unpleasant odors. Also, make sure that the drain line is properly sloped to allow for good drainage. If it’s too horizontal, it can lead to standing water and smells.
