Is My Kitchen Layout Off? Seeking Advice on Fixing It

I recently had a new kitchen fitted in my Victorian terrace home, and I'm really dissatisfied with how it turned out. Our walls are a bit wonky, which I expected, but the cabinets were installed using standard 90° corner pieces, creating an awkward angle that's not in line with the walls or the window. There's a significant wedge shape formed between the sink, wall, and window. Howdens suggested that installers sometimes create custom pieces for irregular spaces, but my fitter insists it must be done at a perfect 90°. He's also mentioned that changing it could lead to a lot of work and might not even solve the issue. I'm wondering, what options do I have? Should I get a second opinion from another fitter? I feel like this could have been addressed during the planning stage. Any advice?

It sounds like your installer might be taking the easier route and ignoring the nuances of older homes. Once the countertops are in, you could regret not pushing for a better fit. I think the cabinets should align more with your walls. If there’s any angle over 90 degrees, consider asking for a filler piece to fill that gap. Don’t end up in a situation where you’re unhappy with what you paid for! The fitter should’ve discussed this with you before proceeding.

I completely agree! My experience has been that good fitters will always adapt to the space, even if it’s not perfectly square. Having a neat finish is critical!

Honestly, it sounds like your fitter made a poor decision and is now trying to justify it. If the cabinets aren't sitting square due to the wall angle, you should definitely consider getting another fitter to look at this. Those corner pieces can be adjusted; it shouldn’t result in a finished product you’re unhappy with. Tackling this early could save you a lot of headaches later on!

You’re absolutely right to feel this way. It seems the cabinets were just not custom-fitted. While the pre-made options are affordable, they don't always work in older homes. If you know others who have similar setups, that could help validate your case. It’s essential to have the kitchen aligned with the walls despite what the fitter thinks. Push for a better solution; you don’t want to be stuck with a layout you dislike after paying so much!

Exactly! I’ve seen how over-90-degree corners can cause issues, and it’s always better to make a change now than live with regret later.
