How Can I Securely Attach My Flag Pole to a Hollow Wooden Column?

Hey everyone! I'm trying to put my flag pole back up after it came down during some windy weather. I used the drywall anchors that came with it, which I thought would work, but it seems like they weren't strong enough since the bracket detached pretty easily. I believe the pole might be too long for the wind conditions, so I'll shorten it before reattaching. However, I'm worried about making it secure this time around since the column feels hollow inside. What are the best methods or hardware I can use to ensure the flag pole stays up properly? Any tips or suggestions would be really appreciated!

I completely agree with FixItFelix89. Drywall anchors are really only for static loads, not for something that’s catching wind like a flag pole. Using solid wood screws is the way to go. If you’ve already widened the hole from the drywall anchor, just reposition it a bit if you can. That's what I did before and it made all the difference with stability. And for your pole length—it can definitely make a difference with the wind, so make sure to keep that in check. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely check the pole length before putting it back up.

First off, attaching to a wooden column means you should definitely avoid those drywall anchors—they just won't hold up to the wind stress. You’ll want to use longer wood screws instead. Try some #10 screws that fit well in your bracket; they should grip especially well if you go in a new spot if the previous hole is too damaged. If you're looking to use anchors, toggle bolts could work too, but honestly, I think wood screws will do the trick just fine. Don’t forget to check if you’re using the right length of flag pole for your area as well. Keep it safe!
