I hired a painting company to do the exterior of my house, but I'm feeling uneasy about how things are going. They didn't trench around the house as we discussed, which I worry will be a hassle later since I want to do more yard work. They also didn't take down the downspouts to paint behind them, despite that being part of our agreement. Additionally, they removed my porch lights and left the screws outside instead of putting them somewhere safe. To make matters worse, the main guy brought his two young kids with him for two days while they painted, and I don't really have a setup for kids in my backyard. I don't want to be that homeowner who nitpicks over everything, so I'm questioning if I'm being unreasonable here.

LOL, I initially thought he might've had the kids working too! I mean, that’s something my dad would have done too. But seriously, having kids around on a work site can be risky for homeowners, so I totally get your discomfort. Plus, who really takes downspouts just to paint behind them? Seems a bit extreme to me! Really, what's the state of the paint job? That’s what matters most.
If they’re not sticking to what was agreed upon—especially if it’s in writing—you definitely have the right to raise these concerns. The trenching and downspouts should be addressed for sure. As for the porch lights, while it’s not a huge deal if nothing's lost, it’s still a bit careless. Regarding the kids, as long as they're not interfering with the work, it's something you might just have to tolerate, though I get the concern—how's the paint job itself looking? Any issues with that?
