Sticky Deck Stain: What Can We Do?

Asked By SunnyPineapple23 On

Hey everyone! I recently stained our deck, but a week later it's turned out to be super sticky. I think we may have applied too much stain. We've already tried using mineral spirits and even adding another layer of stain before wiping it off, but nothing seems to help. What are our options? Any advice would be appreciated!

I had a similar issue once. Just give it a couple of weeks to properly cure first. After that, wash it down with some dish soap and water—should help clear up the stickiness! Assuming the layers were cured between coats, it should be okay.

From what I found, lightly sanding the sticky surface can work wonders. Also, just a heads-up: don’t overload on the thick coats next time. Humidity or mixing old stain can really throw things off. I used water-based stain on mine, and it turned out great!

Water-based stains really are the best! They give such a nice warm tone that just brightens up the space.
