Help! My Garage Smells Like Sewage from the Holding Tank

Hey everyone! I just bought a house that has a holding tank with access in the garage, and I've noticed that even with two seals in place, the garage has this awful sewage smell. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I'm looking for ways to get rid of the odor completely.

You should first pinpoint where the smell is coming from. If it’s from the holding tank and not something you can easily fix, consider installing a venting fan to help draw out the odor. Getting some airflow can make a big difference!

Have you thought about creating an air barrier between the seals and the rest of the garage? You could install an active vent to help filter the air in that area and significantly cut down on odors.

Make sure all your drains have traps filled with water. Sometimes rarely used floor drains can dry out, allowing odors to escape. Check if there's a floor drain in your garage; pouring a bucket of water down it might help seal the trap and reduce the smell.
