Hey everyone! I'm totally new here and just diving into the world of carpentry. I'm excited to build my first desk, keeping things relatively simple: I envision four square legs, one flat surface for the top, and a plank across the bottom for some foot support. I also want to challenge myself by including a narrow drawer right underneath the desk surface.
I live in an urban area without access to a proper workshop, but I can borrow a circular saw from a neighbor. My toolkit is pretty minimal right now—just a drill and a handsaw, plus maybe a sheet sander. I'm planning to source some scrap lumber, likely pine or maple, from Facebook Marketplace.
I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed, so I'm looking for any advice on how to start this project. Is it feasible to make a drawer using just screws and tracks, without any complex millwork? Once I've measured everything, where should I kick off the construction? Am I biting off more than I can chew for my first major project? I'd really appreciate any help!

Consider using a pocket hole jig for secure, hidden screws. Even experienced builders often use plywood for the drawers, so that’s a solid option. If you're in a city, check for a maker space nearby; joining one could give you access to quality tools and materials. If you're looking for smooth, flat wood, buying S4S hardwood might work, but it can be a gamble if you can’t inspect it closely. Thanks! I’ll definitely look into the woodworking resources. I like the idea of using rough-cut or salvaged lumber; maybe I should start with something softer to keep it manageable!
